K53 Learner's Test Questions & Answers (2026)

Free practice questions with answers, written in the same style as the real South African learner's licence test — plus exactly how many questions you'll face and the pass mark for each section.

How many questions & what's the pass mark?

The K53 learner's test has 68 multiple-choice questions in three sections, and you must pass every section on its own:

SectionQuestionsPass mark
Rules of the road3022 / 30
Road signs, signals & markings3023 / 30
Controls of the vehicle86 / 8

That works out to roughly 78% overall. For the full breakdown — vehicle codes, booking, what to bring — see how the K53 test works.

10 practice questions (tap to reveal the answer)

These are original practice questions that test the same facts as the official test. Try to answer before you tap!

What is the general speed limit in an urban area, unless a sign shows otherwise?
60 km/h. The general limits are 60 km/h in urban areas, 100 km/h on public roads outside urban areas, and 120 km/h on freeways — always subject to posted signs.
If your vehicle breaks down on the road, how far behind it must you place your warning triangle?
At least 45 metres behind the vehicle, on the same side of the road, so approaching drivers have time to react.
What is the legal blood-alcohol limit for an ordinary (non-professional) driver?
Less than 0.05 g per 100 ml of blood (0.02 g for professional drivers). The only truly safe choice is not to drink at all before driving.
What is the minimum legal tyre tread depth for a light motor vehicle?
1 mm across the entire tread, around the whole circumference of the tyre.
How close to a fire hydrant may you park?
No closer than 1.5 metres — emergency services must be able to reach it instantly.
How long is your learner's licence valid once you pass?
24 months. If you don't obtain your driving licence within that time, you must write the learner's test again.
May you cross a solid white line painted in the centre of the road?
No. A solid line on your side means you may not cross or straddle it to overtake. A broken line on your side means you may overtake when it is safe.
The traffic light turns amber (yellow) as you approach. What must you do?
Stop — unless you are so close that stopping suddenly would be dangerous, in which case you may proceed with caution. Amber does not mean "speed up".
What must you do at a stop sign, even if the road is clearly empty?
Come to a complete stop behind the line, look in every direction, and only proceed when it is safe. Rolling slowly through a stop is a fail in both the learner's and the driving test.
What is a safe following distance behind the vehicle in front of you in good conditions?
At least 2 seconds — count from when the car ahead passes a fixed point until you do. Increase it to 3 seconds or more in rain, at night or behind large vehicles.

Are these the actual test questions?

No site can honestly promise you the official question paper — the bank used at testing centres is not published, and the wording varies. What matters is that you know the facts and the format: the distances, limits, signs and rules above are exactly what the real test examines, however a question is phrased. Practise until you consistently pass every section and the real wording won't matter.

Beware of sites or sellers claiming to sell "the real exam papers" — the facts they test are the same ones you can practise here for free.
